Adults are reddish-brown, apple/watermelon seed size, and flat unless they've recently fed. They have horizontal texture lines across their back and no wings. They cannot fly and cannot jump — they crawl, quickly.

Nymphs are cream or translucent colored. They may appear red or darker if they've recently fed. Five nymph stages precede adulthood.

Adults? Yes — apple seed size and unfortunately easier to find than your TV remote after midnight. Early-stage nymphs are nearly invisible, which is exactly why K9 inspections exist.

The most common signs: (1) Clusters or lines of 3–5 bites on skin in the morning. (2) Dark gray liquid stains on bedding — bed bug fecal matter is always liquid, like a felt-tip marker touching fabric. (3) Tiny yellowish eggs (grain of rice size) in mattress seams. (4) Shed exoskeletons behind headboard or in seams.

Common sources include: used furniture or mattresses, luggage from hotel stays, Airbnbs, house guests, movie theater seats, airport seating, doctor's office chairs, church pews, and vacation rentals. They do NOT live outside. Your dog did not bring them in from the yard.

Yes — bed bugs can travel through shared walls, plumbing, and electrical conduit in multi-family buildings. Adjacent hotel rooms are also a common transmission path.

They prefer humans, but will bite dogs and cats when humans aren't available. However, your pets didn't bring them home from outside.

Primarily at night when you're sleeping. They pierce skin with a straw-like mouthpart (similar to a mosquito), attach 3–5 times per feeding, feed for 5–20 minutes, then crawl back to their hiding spot. They do NOT live on their host.

Once every 4–7 days when comfortable. They may stop temporarily if disturbed. And here's the terrifying part: bed bugs can survive up to 12 months without feeding, depending on temperature, humidity, and life stage.

DO NOT move items between rooms. Moving infested items spreads the infestation. If you have bed bugs in the bedroom, don't take your blankets to the couch — that's how you get couch bugs too.
